Deep Cleaning vs Regular Cleaning: Which Do You Need?

What a Regular House Cleaning Actually Covers

A regular house cleaning is the visit you schedule weekly, every two weeks, or monthly to keep a home that is already in decent shape from sliding backward. Think of it as maintenance. We wipe down surfaces, clean bathrooms, vacuum and mop floors, dust reachable furniture, clean mirrors, and wipe down the outside of your appliances. The kitchen gets a proper wipe-down, the toilets get scrubbed, and the whole place smells clean when we leave.

What it is not designed for is catching up on buildup. If grease has been baking onto your stovetop for months, or soap scum has calcified around the shower, a standard visit is not the right tool. That is where deep cleaning comes in.

What a Deep Clean Covers That a Regular Clean Does Not

A deep cleaning goes into every corner a routine visit skips. Here is what gets added:

  • Baseboards and door frames, wiped and scrubbed rather than dusted from a distance
  • Blinds and window sills, cleaned slat by slat
  • Inside the oven, including the racks and the glass door
  • Grout lines in showers, tubs, and tile floors
  • Behind and underneath furniture where dust, pet hair, and debris collect
  • Cabinet fronts, light switch plates, and door handles, scrubbed rather than just wiped
  • Shower doors and tracks, descaled where mineral buildup has formed

A deep clean takes significantly longer than a regular visit because we are dealing with layers of buildup, not just surface dirt. The result is a home that feels genuinely reset, not just tidied.

Why San Gabriel Valley Homes Need Deep Cleaning More Often Than Average

If you live in Altadena, La Cañada Flintridge, Arcadia, Sierra Madre, or anywhere else along the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, your home collects more fine particulate than a home further from the foothills. That mountain-facing position means wind carries grit and dust directly into any gap it can find. During Santa Ana wind season, roughly October through January, that problem doubles. Dust settles into baseboards, blinds, and window tracks faster than most people realize.

Older homes add another layer. Pasadena and South Pasadena have entire neighborhoods built in the 1910s through the 1930s with original Craftsman and Spanish Revival details: wood crown molding, plaster walls, hand-painted tile, and built-in cabinetry with dozens of crevices. Those surfaces hold onto dust and grime in ways that a flat modern kitchen simply does not.

Estate-size homes in San Marino and La Cañada Flintridge have more square footage, more rooms, and often more textured surfaces that trap debris. Heavy-use kitchens in Alhambra and San Gabriel accumulate grease buildup faster than average. If you live near the Caltech or JPL corridors in Pasadena, you are probably on a lease cycle that puts real pressure on the condition of a home before you hand back the keys.

The honest answer is this: if you live along the foothills and you have not had a deep clean in the last three to four months, you are overdue, regardless of how often you do regular cleaning in between.

A Special Note on Altadena Homes After the Eaton Fire

Homes in Altadena that survived the January 2025 Eaton Fire may be carrying ash residue, smoke odor, and fine particulate that a regular clean will not fully address. If your home was near the affected area, please reach out before booking so we can talk through what is actually needed. In some cases, smoke and ash remediation requires a specialist. For homes that have been rebuilt and are ready to move into, our move-in/move-out cleaning is the right starting point.

How to Decide Which One to Book First

Use this as a simple guide:

  • Book a deep clean first if you have never had a professional clean, if it has been more than a few months since the last one, if you are moving into a home, if someone in the household has allergies, or if you are along the foothills and Santa Ana season just ended.
  • Book a regular house cleaning if your home is already in good shape and you want to keep it that way on a schedule.
  • Book a move-in/move-out cleaning if you are handing back keys to a landlord or taking possession of a property. This includes everything in a deep clean plus the inside of the refrigerator and cabinets.

Most people find that starting with a deep clean and then moving onto a recurring regular cleaning schedule is the most practical approach. The deep clean does the heavy lifting once, and the regular visits keep the home from reaching that point again.

What Drives the Price Difference

A deep clean takes more time and more effort, so it costs more than a regular visit. The main factors that affect the quote are the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, the overall size of the home, the current condition, whether there are pets, and whether you are adding anything on, such as inside-the-fridge cleaning or interior windows. We give you a flat quote by text before anything is booked, so you know exactly what to expect.
